Bespooked GalleryWelcome to the Bespooked Gallery, a hall devoted to the appreciation of photography. At this point the principal feature of the Gallery is the Bespooked Portfolios section, which houses some examples of Spook's own work. If you're interested in reading more about photography, check out Spook's photography book picks. What's NewThe gallery and Bespooked Portfolio pages have seen two notable developments since our last site update. The first is a profound redesign of the gallery and portfolio pages in connection with our general site redesign. Not only do the gallery and portfolios now sport a new look, but the portfolios themselves have also seen some revisions. In the Family (formerly Grandma's 100th Birthday) portfolio I've swapped a couple of photos for new images not included in the original collection, including a new photo of your hosts, Spook and Spooked. Having observed in the process of reorgnizing the Family portfolio that many of my favorite images turn out to have Cousin Sarah as a principal subject, I also have segregated these into a new small but growing Sarah portfolio which I hope to add to over time. The definitive site for Sarah pics is, of course, Cousin John's site at www.cartania.com. The second development was a fatal February crash of my Western Digital hard drive after just under two years' moderate use. The crash took with it, in addition to my equanimity, many hours' worth of scanned images and works in process which I had not backed up. On the bright side, the crash gave me the opportunity to pop open the computer case and perform a hard-drive-ectomy and transplant and system rebuild, which the patient appears to have survived despite my best efforts. The next couple of months will see much time devoted to reconstructing lost work and I expect to post more images in due course.
For anyone interested in the gallery plumbing, in connection with the gallery redesign I have completely recoded the portfolio layout and display scripts from the ground up. The new design relies much more heavily on javascript-driven automated page layout and image transitions, reducing the portfolio page filesize, greatly simplifying maintenance, and eliminating several bugs in the previous code that I hadn't been aware of until I saw the portfolio try to run itself over a slow network. I've tested the new code in Firefox and IE on WinXP, but javascript is notoriously finicky so my apologies for users of other browsers for any hiccups. The portolios exhibit an obvious preference for traditional black and white images; Spook will have more to say on the subject of monochrome photography presently. All images © 2002-2005 David C.
